Dust Explosions – Dangers at Work
Dust explosion is the combustion of dust that is suspended in air in an enclosed area. Although not on the mind of most employers, dust explosions can be avoided if the proper precautions are taken.
Where does this "dust" come from?
Coal, sawdust, grain, pollen, flour, sugar, powdered milk, aluminum, and magnesium are all sources for dust which can generate a dust explosion. Dust clouds can form when any of these materials are being transported to new locations. Any time these particles are released into the air, there is a potential for explosions.
What could cause an explosion?
Although fire is the most obvious source of explosions, there are many other sources that can cause an explosion:
- Friction
- Sparks from electrical equipment
- Sparks from machinery
- Hot surfaces
- Static charge
Very little dust is needed to cause an explosion.
Ways your employer could stop explosions in the workplace
The easiest way to prevent explosions is to not use combustible materials, however this in not always a realistic option for employers. In that case, employers have the option to use dust proof machinery or non-sparking machinery. They can and should consult a risk assessment firm in order to ensure employee safety from explosion. Employers should always have an escape route for employees. Accidents are bound to happen, but your employer should be held responsible for any injuries that you may receive at work due to an explosion.
