One Injured in Big Spring Refinery Explosion
It was 8am on the morning of February 18th, 2008, when a large explosion occurred at a refinery outside of Big Spring, Texas. The blast of the explosion was reported to be felt as far as 60 miles away and caused the voluntary evacuation of local residents. Howard College and other nearby schools were shut down to ensure the safety of all students. The Alon USA refinery in Big Spring is located almost 250 miles from Forth Worth, Texas, and sits right next to highway I-20. The highway had to be closed as the explosion caused a large cloud of black smoke to rise above the roadway. Local firefighters and police officers rushed to the refinery as the explosion gave way to a raging fire.
One employee was reported to have suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas. Various West Texas medical teams traveled to Big Spring in order to assist with those who have suffered minor injuries. Local businesses have also reported some extensive property damage as a result of the explosion’s blast. The Alon USA refinery produces close to 70,000 barrels per day and has never experienced a disaster of this magnitude in the history of its operation. With one employee facing serious injuries, it would seem that the explosion has spared the life of the 170 employees that work at the refinery.
