Smoke Inhalation: The Effects
Smoke inhalation is defined as the breathing in of smoke of any kind into the lungs. The smoke often contains chemicals that are very bad for your body.
Smoke inhalation can happen as a result of many things, but is mostly related to fires. Whether it’s a chemical explosion which leads to a fire or starts with a building fire, all can cause smoke inhalation by anyone that may be involved in the accident. Most often people become trapped in a building after an explosion and are exposed to smoke before they can get out of the building.
The effects of smoke inhalation can range anywhere from just mild tissue irritation to death and all the places in between. There are three parts to the damage that happens by the smoke inhalation. The first area is that when the smoke comes in, it burns the area it touches. The air that is coming into your lungs is so hot that it can burn your nose, mouth, and your entire respiratory tract. The second part of the process is that can irritate the tissue of your air tract. In most of the fires that occur, some of the materials that are being burned contain chemicals that can be lethal to your tissue cells. By the cells even touching each other, damage can occur. The last type of effect that can occur is the lack of oxygen to the body. The smoke from any type of fire or explosion is made up completely of carbon dioxide. So when you breath in the smoke, you are taking away all of the oxygen from your body. If this occurs over a longer period of time, it can cause parts of your body to begin shutting down because of the lack of oxygen to function.
